Course Description
The Higher Certificate in Autism (HCIA) is a higher intermediate applied course designed for practitioners (teachers, educators, therapists and professionals) who work directly with individuals with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). It has been developed by a team of highly experienced and dedicated professionals from various disciplines in Singapore, Australia and the United States of America.
The Higher Certificate in Autism aims to equip the participants with a high degree of skill and independence in screening, analysis and the development of appropriate intervention strategies in the areas of behaviour and behaviour management as well as language and communication in individuals with autism.
The key differentiators of this higher intermediate applied course are that it is skills-based and developed and taught by practitioners who work hands-on with individuals with autism and who understand the challenges of learning and application of skills within the Singapore context.
There are 2 modules in this programme; topics include:
- Communication difficulties and intervention
- Overview of normal language and communication development
- Review of atypical language development and unconventional communication styles used by individuals with autism (Stages of Autism Language & Communication)
- Screening for language issues and opportunities for improvement
- Crafting visual supports to facilitate the development of social language and communication
- Executing intervention strategies at each language stage
- Positive Behaviour Supports 1
- Overview of why behaviour problems occur
- Collecting behavioural data
- Defining problem behaviour and Identifying an appropriate alternative
- Crafting action plans to help prevent and manage challenging behaviours
- Applying positive strategies to teach appropriate replacement behaviours
- Gain the necessary knowledge and skills to perform individualised assessment
- Acquire knowledge and skills to select appropriate goals and craft meaningful intervention programmes
- Create and develop a selection of appropriate tools to teach positive behaviour and to improve and enhance communication skills
- must have successfully completed and been awarded the Certificate In Autism by Autism Resource Centre (Singapore); and
- must have attained the minimum qualification of Certificate in Special Education, its equivalent, or GCE “O” level; and
- must have at least three (3) months’ experience in working directly with individuals with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD); and
- are currently working with or providing services to an individual with ASD (cannot be your own or your relative’s child) and
- will continue to work with the same individual throughout the course duration
