Course Description

This training workshop is meant for parents/caregivers and professionals working with/caring for pre-adolescents or adolescents with an Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Adolescence, which involves the transition from childhood to adulthood, can be trying both for the adolescent and the parents. Historically, puberty has been heavily associated with the onset of adolescent development and brings about biological, social and psychological changes in the adolescent’s life. Most adolescents will find this a confusing phase of their lives. One can only imagine what it will be like for an adolescent or pre-adolescent with autism.

This workshop will focus on:

Wh03 increasing participant knowledge and awareness of the needs of adolescents and the issues they face
Wh03 providing participant with skills to confidently talk to pre-adolescents or adolescents about puberty and sexuality issues

Participants in this training workshop will also be exposed to key issues in supporting pre-adolescents or adolescents with autism in coping with changes during their adolescent years. A variety of learning activities will encourage the participants’ self-reflection on how the information applies to their own child.

Objectives of The Course

Upon completion of the training workshop, participants will be able to:

Wh58 Develop some practical action steps on what, when, and how to tell their child about the different changes that occur during the adolescence years
Wh58 Craft and apply basic strategies to help their pre-adolescent or adolescent to cope with these changes as well as sexuality issues like hygiene, modesty, feelings, and the dangers of internet.
