Course Description

Attend this training workshop and learn from expert consultants in the field of autism and communication in autism. Come and find out about the different assistive communication options currently available for older children or young adults with autism.
Participants will have the opportunity to learn about, view and explore low-technology approaches designed to help individuals with autism increase their social communication and social interaction success in academic, social and home environments.
This workshop will also provide participants with a variety of solutions and strategies to the challenging problems of communication in older non-verbal children with autism through the application of low-technology assistive communication methods.
Participants will be instructed in the process of determining the specific communication need(s) of the individual with autism and then matching it/them to the appropriate low-technology method/device; taking into consideration the individual’s language/cognitive level.
- Understand the importance of supporting expressive communication in individuals with autism using augmentative/alternative communication options
- Be aware of the different types of low-technology augmentative communication approaches currently available
- Understand how to match the type of augmentative communication device to language/cognitive level of the individual with autism
- Understand ‘Where’ and ‘How’ to begin training
