Course: 2009 Certificate in Autism – SPED/PRI/SEC
This is an applied programme that leads to certification. It is developed by a team of highly experienced and dedicated professionals from various disciplines in Singapore, Australia and the United States of America. Primarily, the Certificate in Autism focuses on building skills which enables a teacher, therapist or parent/caregiver to work more effectively with individuals with autism.
The key differentiators of this applied programme are that it is skills-based and is developed and taught by practitioners who work ‘hands-on’ with individuals with autism and who understand the challenges of learning and application of skills within the Singapore context.
The programme is designed to bridge the ‘knowing-doing’ gap by adopting a highly ‘hands-on’ approach to learning. Participants will be expected to immediately translate theoretical frameworks into a practical model, which directs them to analyse needs, select priority goals and design individualised methodology to teach individuals (with autism) with varying needs and experiences.
Some of the topics include:
- Overview of Normal Development
- Overview of Autism Spectrum Disorder and the unique learning needs, challenges and opportunities for individuals with autism
- Characteristics of Autism and the Iceberg Framework
- The ASD Intervention Framework
- Teaching and supporting individuals with autism through:
- Development and application of visual tools and visual supports
- Structuring the learning environment – physical structure
- Use of schedules, work system checklists and prompting
- Engagement and dis-engagement routines
- Introduction to Language Levels
- Overview of Intervention Strategies for ASD
The Certificate in Autism is designed to empower participants with the knowledge and skills to:
- Describe the key learning characteristics of individuals with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and identify the issues of ‘cultural’ differences in their learning styles
- Analyse and identify the specific learning needs of each individual with autism
- Through the application of Structured Teaching Principles, craft a developmentally-appropriate and individualised intervention programme suited to the specific needs of the individual with autism for his/her understanding and self-management of the learning environment in a flexible manner
