This training workshop is meant for parents/caregivers, teachers/educators, therapists and professionals working with/caring for primary school children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
This training workshop aims to empower participants with the knowledge and skills to craft strategies to help the child with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to expand his/her vocabulary within the home environment and apply it to the academic and social environments.
Language is best learnt by using it. Often children with autism do not have the same opportunities as their typical peers to use language. They require experiential activities to be created for their learning.
Participants will be taught to create a fun, yet structured environment for children with autism to practise the use of language through a “show and tell” format called “News Time”.
Participants will be exposed to tools and strategies that can be applied to effectively support their child with autism in developing meaningful vocabulary through “news time” activity.
Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Understand the impact of autism on the development of vocabulary skills in children with autism
- Structure an appropriate environment to create experiential learning through ‘News Time’ activity
- Set learning objectives for the child
- Create a plan complete with visual supports and other strategic tools for a successful “News Time” session
